Trying to eat healthier? Fruit and vegetables are not only healthy additions to your diet, but they’re affordable and delicious, too! Use these strategies to easily add more produce into your diet:
Start with breakfast. If you’re going to fit at least five servings of fruit and vegetables into your day, try to start with breakfast! You could eat an omelet filled with vegetables, add some sliced strawberries to your yogurt or cereal or grab an apple on your way out the door.
Check out in-season fruit and vegetables. Whether you’re trying something new or purchasing a familiar favorite, buying in-season fruit and vegetables can be a great way to serve great-tasting produce and save money, too.
Try the freezer section. Studies show that frozen fruits and vegetables are comparable to fresh in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. And for convenience, they can’t be beat: they are pre-washed, pre-cut and ready to serve or use in a meal.
Make it easy. Craving something crunchy? Try carrot sticks or sliced peppers! Need to satisfy a sweet tooth? Grab an apple, banana or some raisins! The key is to have healthy snacks prepped and packaged ahead of time —or purchase pre-packaged varieties — so they’re ready whenever you need a snack.
Try something new. Your new favorite is right around the corner! Be adventurous and try a fruit or vegetable you’ve never tried before. A quick Google search can help you figure out the best way to serve and/or prepare it. It’s also fun to try new varieties of old favorites, such as spiralized or riced vegetables or tater tots made with vegetables instead of potatoes. You can ready-made varieties in the freezer section.
